Founded at the end of the 11th century, Fontfroide Abbey became attached to the Cistercian order in 1145. It soon became one of the richest Cistercian abbeys in Christendom, a bastion of Catholic orthodoxy right at the heart of Cathar country. This architectural complex, in a variety of styles from different periods, has been conserved in very good condition. The Abbey is open to the public for visits to the church, chapter house, cloister and refectory, as well as to the 18th-century additions and the gardens and terraces. Since 1908, the Abbey has been deconsecrated and is a venue for all manner of cultural activities, including, every year since 2005, the Festival of Music and History for Intercultural Dialogue, directed by Jordi Savall.
